Born in Dundee, he joined the Army at 15 as a Junior Soldier in Aberdeen and rose to Regimental Sergeant Major of 1st Battalion The Black Watch. After leaving the military he worked as a security professional in conflict zones from 2005 to 2015 and now runs a small soft-services facilities management business. He previously stood as an All for Unity candidate for North East Scotland in 2021.
